We Can Treat Your Foot or Ankle Pain
Foot or ankle pain can negatively affect your day-to-day life and can occur due to several different conditions. Pain can also be an indicator of a more serious underlying condition, which is why you should seek professional help as soon as you notice any abnormalities in your feet.
How Rheumatoid Arthritis Affects the Feet
Rheumatoid arthritis, or RA, is an inflammatory condition that commonly affects the joints, including those in the feet. People with RA often experience symptoms such as pain, swelling, and stiffness in the smaller joints of the toes and forefoot. Over time, if not properly managed, this can lead to joint deformities, nodules, and even altered foot shape. Foot issues from rheumatoid arthritis can affect mobility and quality of life, making it harder to perform daily activities. A podiatrist can help alleviate discomfort by prescribing custom orthotics, addressing inflammation, and offering treatments to slow joint damage. They can also address associated skin problems, like corns and calluses, which often develop from pressure points on the feet. Early intervention and continuous care are essential to prevent further complications. If you have foot pain related to rheumatoid arthritis, it is suggested that you make an appointment with a podiatrist for an exam, diagnosis, and treatment options.
Because RA affects more than just your joints, including the joints in your feet and ankles, it is important to seek early diagnosis from your podiatrist if you feel like the pain in your feet might be caused by RA. For more information, contact Priyanka Mude, DPM of North Canton Podiatry. Our doctor will assist you with all of your podiatric concerns.
What Is Rheumatoid Arthritis?
Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disorder in which the body’s own immune system attacks the membranes surrounding the joints. Inflammation of the lining and eventually the destruction of the joint’s cartilage and bone occur, causing severe pain and immobility.
Rheumatoid Arthritis of the Feet
Although RA usually attacks multiple bones and joints throughout the entire body, almost 90 percent of cases result in pain in the foot or ankle area.
Symptoms
- Swelling and pain in the feet
- Stiffness in the feet
- Pain on the ball or sole of feet
- Joint shift and deformation
Diagnosis
Quick diagnosis of RA in the feet is important so that the podiatrist can treat the area effectively. Your doctor will ask you about your medical history, occupation, and lifestyle to determine the origin of the condition. Rheumatoid Factor tests help to determine if someone is affected by the disease.

What Is a High Ankle Sprain?
A high ankle sprain is an injury to the syndesmotic ligament complex that stabilizes the tibia, or shin bone, and fibula. This type of sprain occurs when the ankle is forcefully twisted outward or when the leg rotates inward while the foot is fixed. Unlike common ankle sprains, high ankle sprains often heal more slowly due to the involvement of these critical ligaments. Early symptoms include pain above the ankle, swelling, and difficulty bearing weight. Risks for high ankle sprains include sports activities, especially those involving sudden changes in direction or impact. Complications from untreated high ankle sprains can lead to chronic instability and susceptibility to future injuries. Diagnosis typically involves a physical examination and imaging tests like X-rays or MRI scans to assess the severity of the injury. Treatment varies depending on the injury's extent. If you are experiencing ankle pain, it is suggested you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist for proper diagnosis and care.
Although ankle sprains are common, they aren’t always minor injuries. If you need your ankle injury looked at, contact Priyanka Mude, DPM from North Canton Podiatry. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.
How Does an Ankle Sprain Occur?
Ankle sprains are the result of a tear in the ligaments within the ankle. These injuries may happen when you make a rapid shifting movement while your foot is planted. A less common way to sprain your ankle is when your ankle rolls inward while your foot turns outward.
What Are the Symptoms?
- Pain at the sight of the tear
- Bruising/Swelling
- Ankle area is tender to touch
- In severe cases, may hear/feel something tear
- Skin discoloration
Preventing a Sprain
- Wearing appropriate shoes for the occasion
- Stretching before exercises and sports
- Knowing your limits
Treatment of a Sprain
In many cases, the RICE method (Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevate) is used to treat ankle sprains. However, you should see a podiatrist to see which treatment option would work best with your injury. In severe cases, surgery may be required.
It is important to ask your doctor about rehab options after you receive treatment for your injury. Stretching, strength training, and balance exercises may help the ankle heal while also preventing further injury.

What Is a Podiatrist?
Someone would seek the care of a podiatrist if they have suffered a foot injury or have common foot ailments such as heal spurs, bunions, arch problems, deformities, ingrown toenails, corns, foot and ankle problems, etc.
Podiatric Treatment
A podiatrist will treat the problematic areas of the feet, ankle or lower leg by prescribing the following:
- Physical therapy
- Drugs
- Orthotic inserts or soles
- Surgery on lower extremity fractures
A common podiatric procedure a podiatrist will use is a scanner or force plate which will allow the podiatrist to know the designs of orthotics. Patients are then told to follow a series of tasks to complete the treatment. The computer will scan the foot a see which areas show weight distribution and pressure points. The podiatrist will read the analysis and then determine which treatment plans are available.

When to See a Podiatrist for Flat Feet
Flat feet, also known as fallen arches, occur when the arches of the feet are lower than usual or completely flat, causing the entire sole of the foot to touch the ground when standing. While many people with flat feet experience no symptoms, others may develop pain, particularly in the feet, ankles, or lower legs. This condition can lead to overpronation, where the foot rolls inward excessively during walking or running, potentially causing alignment issues and stress on the knees and hips. If flat feet develop suddenly in adulthood, it may indicate an underlying issue such as a tendon injury or arthritis. If you have persistent pain and difficulty engaging in activities because of flat feet, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist who can assess the severity, recommend treatments like orthotics, and guide you on managing symptoms to prevent complications and improve foot function.
Flatfoot is a condition many people suffer from. If you have flat feet, contact Priyanka Mude, DPM from North Canton Podiatry. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.
What Are Flat Feet?
Flatfoot is a condition in which the arch of the foot is depressed and the sole of the foot is almost completely in contact with the ground. About 20-30% of the population generally has flat feet because their arches never formed during growth.
Conditions & Problems:
Having flat feet makes it difficult to run or walk because of the stress placed on the ankles.
Alignment – The general alignment of your legs can be disrupted, because the ankles move inward which can cause major discomfort.
Knees – If you have complications with your knees, flat feet can be a contributor to arthritis in that area.
Symptoms
- Pain around the heel or arch area
- Trouble standing on the tip toe
- Swelling around the inside of the ankle
- Flat look to one or both feet
- Having your shoes feel uneven when worn
Treatment
If you are experiencing pain and stress on the foot you may weaken the posterior tibial tendon, which runs around the inside of the ankle.
